Add a direct manager

How to control who employees directly report to.

📎NOTE: These steps for Sage HR users who have the Core HR module. If you use Sage HR Essentials, you should use our HR Essentials guide to assign Direct Managers.

Direct managers are based on the company org chart. This is the person in the company who has subordinates based on the org chart structure. This means they can access all employees who are one level directly under them in the org chart.

You can assign or edit who is a direct manager is of certain employees in three ways:

Option 1 - Org Chart

  1. On the main menu click on Company.

  2. Click the Org Chart tab at the top.

  3. Drag and drop employee cards onto the person you want to be their direct manager.

    Alternatively on the employee card click on the cog on the top right, select a Direct manager from the drop down, then click Change.



  4. Once done, make sure to click Save.

Option 2 - Employee profile

  1. Open any employee profile.

  2. Click the Employee tab on the profile menu.

  3. Scroll down to Direct Manager.

  4. Select who you want to be the employee's direct manager from the drop down.


  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, then click Save.

Option 3 - Org Chart settings

  1. Click your name in the top right-hand corner, then click Settings.

  2. On the General settings menu, click Employee data.

  3. Click Org Chart.

  4. To change an employee's direct manager, click the pencil icon ✏️.


  5. Click the drop-down arrow and select the direct manager from the employee list.

  6. Click Save.
