Error: 'Your time off can't start earlier than XX (a date in the future)'

How to resolve this error when submitting a time off request in Sage HR.

Written by Oliver Cook

When submitting a time off request, you may see an error about not being able to request time off that starts before a specific future date.

EXAMPLE:

Your time off can't start earlier than 09/10/2025

Time off request error

This error occurs when an admin has selected the Require minimum X days before start date setting within a time off policy's settings, and the date you're submitting is before is within the period you can't request time off for.

For example, an admin has configured their time off policy settings in the following way:

Require minimum 14 days before time off start date

The current date is 25/09/2025, and you request time off for 01/10/2025 to 03/10/2025. You won't be able to submit time off for these dates, as you won't be able to request dates that are before 09/10/2025.

You'll need to select a different date. If someone authorises these dates as an exception, an admin user can temporarily disable the relevant setting to process the time off request.
