Understanding your responsibilities

Each year, for all qualifying employees, employers need to submit the following:

  • T4s to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

  • RL-1s to Revenu Québec

They also need to provide a copy of the tax documents for all qualifying employees by the end of February each year.

The T4 summarises each employee's earnings and deductions for the year.

The RL-1, also known as Relevé 1, is a year-end tax form. It reports the earnings and statutory deductions for Québec employees in a tax year.

Send tax documents to Sage HR, so employees can access them in the same way as they access pay statements.

The CRA requires you to keep adequate records for six years after you file each return.

Your records must provide enough detail to determine your tax obligations and support your deductions.

Keep all your original documents well organized and available. You'll need to show these if the CRA decides to audit your company. Read more about keeping records (opens in a new tab).
